1.1 Importance of teamwork

1.1.0 Introduction

Many modern business organizations are adopting team-based structures that bring together the managerial, organization, and team goals as one. Teamwork within the organization will always provide complete, quality, and change of processes (Zhang, Wang & Wang, 2010). A team can be defined as a group of people that work together with a common purpose. Teamwork helps in completing tasks that are of high complexity. A group of people does not constitute a team, for a group to be seen as a team, the members must have complementary skills and directly generate synergy by having a highly coordinated effort giving a chance every member to maximize their strengths and completely bring down their weaknesses (the United States, 1992).

1.1.1 Characteristic of effective team

  • Meaningful common purpose: all members have to understand and commit to the purpose of the teams. The manager of the team has to clearly define what is expected of the teams (Kendall, Kenneth, and Julia Kendall, 2005).
  • Clear performance goals: the group has to understand all that has to be done to achieve success; they have to know the desired outcome of the group.
  • Diversity in skills and personality: to help in driving innovation and creativity, people with different skills and perspectives have to be put in the same team. This is in spite of the fact that consistency has to be there too (Brooks, 1994).
  • Strong collaboration and communication: efficient communication among the team members from the manager is the basic thing that brings collaboration.
  • Trust and commitment: trust is one of the key building blocks for a successful team. Lack of both trust and commitment totally jeopardize productivity (Zhang, Wang & Wang, 2010).

Teamwork is the most effective way of achieving the goals of the business because it will greatly improve customer service delivery, rapid response to the changes in the market, raising expectations of the company, and creation of continuous learning in the business. These advantages are paramount to bringing the business into the modern status (Brooks, 1994).

The team will collaborate by working together on the same tasks by contributing their various skills. They will also improve on their communication by making developing a system that allows every member to consult another even the manger. Developing trust and commitment among the team member is also the key factor that will make the team collaborate and achieve the goals of the business (the United States, 1992).
