EMPLOYERS GENRE ANALYSIS For close to two decades now, the of dis community has been a contentious one. Critics tend to assume that their imaginary consensus and the little-shared experience on their side shows the reality of what happens in the ground when it comes to a community way of communication to be specific, language used as well as the common patterns. Subsequently, the subject of community discourse is an unwavering in addition to ideal, however, to others it is seductive to an extent of concealing the real language as well as the social practices that occur in a community. This challenges the work of researchers and, therefore, tagging community discourse a subject that is limited regarding pedagogical importance. In the following three letters that are connected in the way they are written; hence the vital goal of this essay is to critically examine the language used, the patterns of the language and how the employer genre is used in different communities. It is inherent to note that the three are cover letters for professionals seeking new job vacancies. Assuming the job, vacancies were announced on the newspaper, radio or the internet. The first two letters have been written by residents of Arizona. Therein, it does not surprise the way the cover letters are formatted. The address is written in the block formula both on the left that of the addressee and the addresser. The first paragraphs are characterized with the mentioning of the vacant position that the applicants are interested in. The onset or rather the objectives of the letter are clearly stated in the first paragraph. The applicants go on to expressing their knowledge on the importance of the said vacancies, their experiences as well as their expertise in the said fields. The conclusion part of the letters is that they have attached their other documents to support their cover letters. Well, it will be right to say that the employers in Arizona use cover letter as way communication from their prospective employees. Therefore, it is vital that everyone who wants to apply for a job be familiar with writing cover letters. These two letters analyzes the genre of the employer instructions. The instructions are laid down and every other professional ought to follow them to the letter. This is despite you being a resident of Arizona or not. Well, the purpose of the instructions may be clear, to set a record for the professional community. However, it is critical to note that everyone has a different belief and having these instructions only make the professional community to be higher in the hierarchy of the community. The third letter that is written by Miami resident is quite different from the two mentioned above. Well, the genre to be analyzed is still the same, employer’s instructions. For instance, from my reading I could only add it up that the instructions were clearly stated that the letter should be addressed to the search committee hence the “dear, search committee." Genres mainly represent communities of different individuals, as well as they, give out a conclusion on very significant interest as of certain communities (Swales 33). It becomes difficult for a community that is narrow-minded to uphold the interests of the set genres. However, most genres developed are aimed at making the functions of a community uniform such that even nonmembers have no option but to follow the same. Language pattern used in the letters is that of request, formal and informative as well. The collection of the three letters written by Adriana Smith, Jamey Rodgers and Maureen Garcia are requesting for job opportunities at different fields in the career world. “I am writing, to apply” is an example of phrase used in the three letters. The phrases show that they have been asked to explain the reason as to why their writing the cover letter. The phrase is setting the phase to show that they are aware there is an existing vacancy in the company, university or hospital. Other words used such as” My administrative skills and extensive experience in the field satisfies the requirement for the position”……. “I have previous experience tutoring at SALT, where I worked for two years”……… require the interviewing panel to assess the enclosed documents to ensure that they have the right information. The terms such as “am eagerly waiting for your reply”…”I am available for interviews either on phone or in person” are words used to depict readiness for the job opportunity. In such a community, one can only assure the employer that they are ready if they articulate the terms mentioned above. The applicants use formal language as well a polite language. This is in regards to the employers instructions. Well, the instructor’s genre does not allow one to say anything negative about them even if one is aware of their weaknesses (Swales 56). They also deny a community to be realistic but make them quite seductive thanks to the language pattern used such as “my skills, expertise” etc. As a matter of fact, the genre of employer instructions asks the interviewing panel to evaluate the skills and expertise of the applicant through their expressions in writing. The negativity involved with the employer’s instructions genre is that at times the panel in charge of evaluation might find it challenging choosing the right people for the jobs. For instance, an applicant with a five-year experience stands a better chance of getting the job than one who has a two-year experience or no experience at all. However, the person with least experience might be a fast learner, and his newly acquired skills might steer the company to greater success if only given the chance (Swales 67). Due to the linguistics and technical nature of the employer’s instructions the situation of complexity and rhetoric arises. The interviewing panel is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that they maintain the name of their work place and ensure that the goals of the work places are achieved. This is despite the fact that there are ignorant panelists, and yet the fate of someone lies in their hands they are either going to make it or break it. Conclusively, the employer’s genre shapes the way a community express themselves through writing. This is a way to back up their testimonials and cover letters are important because they give a g o ahead to the questions to be answered on the interview day as well as referrals.
