The author's way of giving data from a research done by a credential personality along with details of the research shows the use of Ethos. Further explaining about the detailed version of her research he also says that contrary to our old belief system, giving a child a mild spank did not leave the child scarred for life. This research was conducted by Dr. Diana Baumrind who is a psychologist at the University of California at Berkeley. To increase the effectiveness of the use of ethos, the author smartly also mentions how Dr Diana Baumrind herself opposed spanking but her research brings another opinion which other opponents refuse to.

The article clearly draws a thin line between the research and the opponents and shows a distinction between the mild spanking and the harsh variants practiced by a few. Secondly, using pathos in his article, the author also talks about the orthodoxy that assured that spanking regardless of severity was actually an abuse .He highlights as to how orthodoxy treated parents who admitted to spanking as primitive dolts. He then mentions about the orthodoxy which encouraged parents to negotiate with the kids in order to protect and develop their self esteem.

This did not show a sincere concern towards the child's development. The author gives an emotional touch about not so good experience of the teachers who dealt with kids from house holds where adult authority is not respected. To increase the effectiveness of the use of pathos, the author simply says we have forgotten that family is not a democracy but a benign dictatorship as that's our responsibility to take care of the younger generations with our experience. The authors mention about the family and the orthodoxy shows the use of pathos and his mention about the teachers experiences and the negligence of the parents for self esteem shows the effective use of his persuasion.. Thirdly the author gives logical comparisons showing us the use of Logos in his article.

He says that it's ridiculous to compare mild spanking with someone who has been punched or stomped, and also illogical to negotiate with a 5 year old who just knows to scream and understands not much. In order to increase the effectiveness of the use of Logos in his article, he also asks us who are in charge of whom and who need to teach whom and warns that if we continue without logical thinking, it's just like spoiling a child to become a self centered adult who would not know what to do in unpredictable ways of lifeIn conclusion, the author smartly uses ethos, pathos and logos in a very effective way and smoothly explains that from the bad effects of spanking to how much good it can really do if done in mild way in the right time.
